Acupuncture - What to Expect During a Session
-
All sessions begin with an assessment interview to establish the current complaints and/or progress. The Acupuncturist will feel the pulse on both wrists and look at the tongue, these are diagnostic strategies used by Chinese Medicine practitioners. Then the treatment will be administered. The needles will remain in the body for
15-30 minutes depending on what is best for the condition.
-
Oftentimes the insertion of needles into body points is painless. However, when acupuncture needles are inserted into chronically tightened muscles, there may be a tightening or achy sensation, which will usually subside. Then, the muscle is in a lengthened resting state and may become less painful and often stronger. The muscles may continue to lengthen even after the treatment has ended. Relief may be immediate, or there may be soreness for a few days around the area of treatment due to lactic acid release. The use of heating pads, hot baths and stretching to decrease post-treatment soreness is recommended.
- Though each individual case is different, the average number of visits needed for significant improvement of acute conditions ranges from 6-12 weekly appointments. Chronic conditions may require an extended treatment protocol. In general, if no benefits are evident within a few sessions, treatment is discontinued.
